As my regular reader know, I'm a writer by trade and I've discovered a free tool of the trade.

WordWeb is a free English thesaurus and dictionary for Windows, and can be used to look up words from within almost any program in just one click. It works off-line, but can also look up words in web references such as the Wikipedia encyclopedia.

I found out about this slick tools for writing by way of Lifehacker's Rick Broika who has this to say about WordWeb:

This dictionary/thesaurus can look up words in almost any program. Just press the Ctrl key and right-click a word: Up pops WordWeb (and fast, too). WordWeb can also find sets of related words and leverage your Internet connection to pull info from Wikipedia, Wiktionary and other sources. It'll even pronounce words for you.

At the risk of gushing, I think I'm in love! This is an impossibly handy tool, far superior to the dictionary and thesaurus built into, say, Microsoft Word. WordWeb works with all versions of Windows. It's free for personal use!
